A Clean Energy Future
The majority of Hawaii’s energy is currently generated from petroleum. Hawaii’s goal is to reduce our dependence on imported crude oil and reduce greenhouse gas emissions for a cleaner energy future, now and for future generations. Hamakua Energy’s Firm Renewable Energy Project will help our state achieve its clean energy goals.
Energy Resiliency
Hawaii Island currently derives electricity from a variety of sources: wind, solar, geothermal, and conventional fossil fuels. Wind and solar are “intermittent” energy sources because these energy sources rely upon the availability of wind and sunshine. Days that are overcast or don’t have much wind can affect the availability of energy.
Hamakua Energy was the first energy producer on the island to adopt “firm renewable energy.” Firm renewable energy uses renewable fuels to generate electricity and offer enhanced energy reliability because unlike intermittent energy, firm renewable energy is not dependent on weather conditions. This means Hawaii Island families and businesses can have the electrical power when they need it.
Community Benefits
Hamakua Energy employees are actively involved in the community and our company has been a major supporter of various community programs for the past 20 years. When the Hamakua Energy Firm Renewable Energy Project begins operations in 2030, we will continue our commitment to financial support of schools and nonprofit organizations in our community. This commitment will continue over the term of our new power purchase agreement (PPA).
Hamakua Energy has had preliminary conversations with community leaders of schools and nonprofit organizations to identify the needs of those in Honokaa to help determine how Hamakua Energy’s contributions can have the greatest impact. With community input, our investments will help to create a stronger, more vibrant future for the Honokaa community.
