Hamakua Energy provides electricity for Hawaiian Electric’s grid to distribute to homes and businesses throughout Hawaii Island.
Our plant has been operating for about 25 years. Since 2017, Hamakua Energy, located in Honokaa on the northern coast of Hawaii Island, has been a part of Pacific Current. We focus on developing green infrastructure and being a catalyst for Hawaii’s transition to zero carbon, self-sufficiency and resiliency. Hamakua Energy’s power plant generates 60 megawatts of electricity a day, which supplies about a third of the electricity for Hawaii Island.
In October 2019, Pacific Current partnered with Pacific Biodiesel Technologies on a biodiesel supply contract to increase our use of renewable fuels. This helped to decrease Hawaii Island’s dependence on imported fossil fuels and support local economic development and green jobs.
The electricity we generate is currently sold to Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) under an existing power purchase agreement (PPA) that continues through 2030. Based on our timeline, if we obtain all of the necessary approvals from Hawaiian Electric and the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, our new, all-renewable fuels power plant will be ready to supply the electricity to our island’s grid at the end of 2030.
